Opening Sequence to Coraline (2009)

The  first thing we see is the film corporation that made this film

This shows the production company for the film

The title of the film is cleverly displayed so that a button, which is highly significant replaces the letter o and the font is cleverly thought out. so that it looks like sewing thread. This is significant because it gives an insight into the story that we are about to hear. The title is in white so that it stands out against the red background.

`The names of the actors in the film are displayed

We then see a rag doll floating towards us through the open window. We later find out that this doll is the doll representing the last girl who went through the portal into the other world and who agreed to have buttons sewed on instead of eyes- this is the only way they can stay there and in their process they loose their souls.

As the lead animators names are displayed, metal hands grab hold of the doll and guide her into the room

The doll is then laid onto an open case full of tools by the hand

The doll is then turned onto its back by the hand and is held in place.

The doll is then turned on its front

The doll is then cut open with scissors

The name of the concept artist is displayed

The dolls hair is then pulled out by the metal hands.

The camera then cuts to a extreme close-up of her hair being pulled out as the names of the art directors are shown

The doll now has no hair and the camera cuts to a shot of the dolls face and we see sewing needles on top of her button eyes as the storyboard supervisor's name is shown

The button eyes are then takes off, leaving the doll with bits of string where her eyes should be

Her mouth is then cut open so that the stuffing inside her is visible

The doll's stuffing is then pulled out of her mouth

The doll is then turned inside out as the editors names are displayed. The way that this doll is handled and disposed of is quite brutal.

As the name of the visual effects supervisor is displayed, new stuffing is poured into the doll

The doll is then laid onto the open case as if some surgical procedure is about to be performed on it

As the name of the person who composed the score is displayed the metal hand threads a needle

The mouth is then sewn back together

As the name of the supervising animator is displayed, new buttons are selected for her eyes

The new button is then sewn on

As the name of the director of photography is displayed, we see the metal hand sewing the button, which is quite eerie because of the use of shadows and lighting. The metal hand also reminds me of a skeleton but the fact that it's metal makes it more sinister.

As the name of the producers is displayed, new hair is sewed onto the doll.

A new outfit is then created for the doll.

The author who wrote the novel that the film is based on is displayed while the machine works away at making a new outfit for the doll

As the doll is finished, the audience realise that the doll has taken on an entirely new identity of the main character who you will later meet, a little girl called Coraline.

As the director's name is displayed, the doll floats out of the open window, in the same way it came in.
